Using Google Analytics 4 (GA4) With Your Trellis Fundraiser
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is a powerful tool that helps you understand how donors are interacting with your fundraiser page. Trellis allows you to connect your own GA4 Property ID so you can access deeper insights directly in your Google Analytics account.
What Is a GA4 Property ID?
Your GA4 Property ID is a unique identifier that starts with the letter "G". It looks like this:
G-XXXXXXXXXX
If your ID looks like GTM-XXXXXX, that is a Tag Manager ID and will not work on Trellis.
When the correct GA4 ID is added to Trellis, it allows Google Analytics to track activity on your fundraiser page and send that data straight to your organization's Google Analytics account.
Where Do I Add My GA4 ID in Trellis?
You can add your GA4 Property ID directly inside the Trellis Builder:
-
Open your fundraiser in the Builder
-
Go to your Sidebar Settings
-
Select Tracking
-
Enter your GA4 Property ID (starting with
G-) in the Google Analytics 4 field
Trellis will check that the ID is in the correct format before saving it.
How Tracking Works on Your Fundraiser Page
Once your GA4 Property ID is added, Trellis automatically sends page activity to:
-
Your organization's GA4 property
-
Trellis’s default GA4 property
This means you continue to receive the built-in reporting inside Trellis, while also unlocking the full power of Google Analytics. You don’t need to install any additional code or use Tag Manager containers—Trellis handles everything behind the scenes.
Why Connect Your GA4 Property to Trellis?
Adding your GA4 Property ID gives your organization extra insight and control over how donors interact with your fundraiser. While Trellis provides built-in reporting, connecting GA4 lets you take your analytics further.
Key Benefits
-
Own your data: All fundraiser activity flows directly into your Google Analytics account for long-term tracking and year-over-year insights.
-
Deeper reporting: Build custom dashboards and reports tailored to your fundraising goals.
-
Stronger marketing insights: See which channels (email, social, ads) drive the most engagement and donations.
-
Better optimization: Connect to tools like Google Ads or Data Studio to measure and improve campaign performance.
-
Full donor journey visibility: Track how supporters move from your website to your Trellis fundraiser and through to donation.
GA4 vs. Google Tag Manager
Please note that Trellis supports Google Analytics 4, but does NOT support Google Tag Manager (GTM).
-
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is used to analyze data. It tracks views, clicks, and donations.
-
Google Tag Manager (GTM) is used to manage code. It acts as a container to hold various tracking scripts on a website.
Because Trellis handles all the technical coding and script management for you automatically, you do not need a GTM container. You only need to tell us where to send the data.
Please ensure you are using a GA4 Property ID and not a GTM Container ID.
Do I Have to Use GA4?
No—adding a GA4 Property ID is completely optional. Trellis still includes its own built-in analytics and reporting. GA4 simply gives you additional, more advanced capabilities if your team wants deeper insight.
