Testing your Event Ticket Purchase and Items for Sale Purchase

In this article, we will guide you on how to test and have the full donor experience when purchasing event tickets or Items for Sale.

Trellis offers a few methods for testing purchases before your event goes live. We recommend using a promo code or the Sales Entry System to avoid Stripe processing fees.

How to Test a Purchase

Using a Promo Code

This method lets you simulate the full donor experience, including confirmation emails, receipts, and ticket PDFs.

  1. Log in to your Trellis account.
  2. Create a free promo code for the ticket or item you want to test. See this article for setting up promo codes.
  3. Click Publish Changes.
  4. Visit your live fundraiser page.
  5. Select the ticket or item and proceed through checkout.
  6. Apply the promo code and complete the transaction.

Please Note: Tax receipts will not generate for promo code test purchases since the transaction total is $0.

Important Reminder About Stripe Fees

If you choose to test a purchase using a real credit card, you may incur processing fees.

Trellis is not able to refund Stripe fees. To avoid them, we strongly recommend using the promo code or SES offline method for testing.

Using the Sales Entry System

This method creates an offline checkout with no Stripe fees, making it ideal for admin testing or team training.

  1. Open the Sales Entry System from your fundraiser's Event Tools.
  2. Select the ticket or item you want to test.
  3. Choose an offline payment type (e.g., Cash or Check).
  4. Complete the transaction.

How to Clean Up Test Transactions

Test transactions cannot be deleted. To remove them, issue a refund (including $0 transactions) — this will also remove the attendee and the transaction from your fundraiser's activity roll. See How to Issue Refunds for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete a test transaction?

No. Test transactions cannot be deleted, but you can issue a $0 refund to remove the attendee and clear the transaction from your activity roll.

Will I receive a tax receipt during a promo code test?

No. Tax receipts are not generated for $0 transactions, so they will not appear during promo code test purchases.
